Sense and Sensibility

Sense and Sensibility
Sense and Sensibility (1995)

IMDB rating: 7.60

Plot: When Mr. Dashwood dies, he must leave the bulk of his estate to the son by his first marriage, which leaves his second wife and three daughters (Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret) in straitened circumstances. They are taken in by a kindly cousin, but their lack of fortune affects the marriageability of both practical Elinor and romantic Marianne. When Elinor forms an attachment for the wealthy Edward Ferrars, his family disapproves and separates them. And though Mrs. Jennings tries to match the worthy (and rich) Colonel Brandon to her, Marianne finds the dashing and fiery Willoughby more to her taste. Both relationships are sorely tried. But this is a romance, and through the hardships and heartbreak, true love and a happy ending will find their way for both the sister who is all sense and the one who is all sensibility.

My pupils are working on old legends and myths. I was wondering what classic film I would show them.?
I have thought about "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". What would you suggest? These are adults and adolescents.
I was thinking about British legends or Celtic ones because I am a teacher o ESL.
Thank you. :)

I love any of the King Arthur films. If you can get hold of a copy try ‘Mists of Avalon’, this is a pretty long film though, about 3 hours I think, but it is a good one.
I also think that the Robin Hood films are also great.
Also, what about: Merlin. This is apparently a good film.
There is also: Fairy Tale. A true story of the Cottingley Fairies where two girls reproduced the fairies at the bottom of the garden. A great English myth that had people believing in it for years. This one is based on true facts.
I hope these help in some way and I wish english was so interesting when I was studying it - it must be great fun in your class. :-)

What about "Arthur", the relatively new one out about Arthur and his knights? Or there is one of my favorites "Excalibur" which as more of the traditional Arthurian legend components in it. Both these films would be appropriate. Your choice is also good.

Don Quixote has always been a classic movie and book.

I, personally, have enjoyed working with students on Ivanhoe. Again both the Movie and the book are classics.

There is always "A Midsummer’s night dream." Shakespeare can do no wrong. Especially when he draws from classic mythology. I believe there are several movie versions about.

If you want to get really serious there is the movie called "The Trojan Women," but it is a bit too serious for young’uns.
