I need help with a mean father?
Hi,
I am 18 years old and I have two younger siblings, a brother 13 and a sister 16. For the past 4 years or so, my father has been particuarly mean to me and my mother. He never says hello to me, laughs and yells in my face, makes mumbling noises or laughs ("ha ha") whenever he is around me, calls me an ungrateful bitch. He is equally mean to my mother.
But the thing that upsets me is his double standards that he applies to his selective love to his offspring. He tells me he hates me, but tells my brother and sister that he loves them and that they’re such a good boy/girl right infront of me, which then he proceeds to look at me as if he’s saying it on purpose. He sucks right up their asses. He’s paying for my sister to go to America for a holiday for the 2nd time, and taking my brother to Disneyland for his birthday, when he failed to say happy birthday to me, or even a hello on my birthday. He took a ‘family’ holiday earlier this year - first saying that it was boys only (him and brother), but failed to tell my mum that my sister was going too. My mum begged and cried to come on holiday as she thinks my brother is growing up too fast and wants to cherish these precious moments, but he refused. And it wasn’t because of a shortage funds. He didn’t want I or my mother there.
Another thing that hurts me is the way he treats my boyfriend. My boyfriend is handsome, intelligent and a real gentleman when it comes to relationships and women. Yet when he comes to my house, he says hello to my dad and he says nothing back and walks in the opposite direction - when my boyfriend has done nothing wrong. However if my sister or brother invites friends over, he laughs and tells jokes, makes them banana milkshakes and is nice and friendly to them.
It’s so unfair! I have not done anything since year 9, I got excellent grades in my final year of highschool, but there wasn’t a single congratulations or well done from him regarding my efforts.
I don’t know what to do. I want to move out but have nor the resources or money to move. I confide in my boyfriend sometimes, but there’s not much he can do. My mum knows how he treats me, and they get into fights about it, but my dad is so blind by his actions - he thinks that what he’s doing is completely normal. He won’t pay for food, or the odd textbook I require for Uni, or even a birthday card, yet has all this money for holidays and golf carts. He also afforded to get a copy of my car keys, so he can move it off an on the driveway - he could just ask me to move it? It’s just another way to avoid contact with me.

This can be considered abusive behavior. Also making a copy of your car keys can be illegal if it was without your permission. Solving this type of problem is tough. It depends on how you want to handle it. You can call the police or department of social services. You can also just suck it up and carry on with your life. Either choice is tough to make and what you want to deal with.

I feel for both u and your mother, but why does your mother let it happen? Your mother should find strength to leave this bully of a so called man, coz thats all he is if he can make 2 womens lives miserable. I dont know where u live but in England we have a housing system, so u could leave home and see citizen advice or the housing co and tell them u have had to leave home due to an abusive father. maybe he doesnt like your mother, and he seems your mother in you. so as a reaction he dislikes you.
i dont know the reason why he doesnt like your mother could be anything. men are weird complxed creatures.

life is hard as it is. i know all those things hurt you. we have major financial problems but my dad doesnt give us money but gives to other brothers children bcz they have no father. i find that unfair too but somehow i dont think of it.

Regardless of this man’s reasoning for his obvious difference of treatment regarding you and your mother, this is his home. Regardless as to why your mother continues to stay with him, you are an adult at 18 and are now living on borrowed time and what little graciousness he does have by allowing you to stay in the home.

Don’t look for answers as to why he’s behaving this way or that way. Just stay focused on what you need to do while you must remain in this home. Your mother may not be able to stand ground for you because she may have her own reasons for not wanting to make too much of an issue about it other than a few fights when the treatment gets too unbearable. Just know this, that you are an adult… you must look to be responsible for yourself even though you may be looking for additional parental care while you’re still going to school.

Your boyfriend merely adds additional tension and I would recommend going somewhere other than your home to spend time with him. Seriously start planning and saving for your independent living arrangements as your father’s behavior is apparently only getting to be more progressive. Also there could be more sinister things advancing besides just the hostility you’re interpreting in him. He could advance to the stages of physical abuse of either you, your mother, your boyfriend or even your other siblings. I recommend staying with another person for a few days to ascertain what type of effect your being gone has on him. You may find that you’ll want to try to move sooner than later.

If all else fails, contact a local church or even a counselor at your school and inform someone that this behavior is going on. They might have resources you could try or if nothing else it will serve as a testimony of sorts if things become too far out of control. Whatever you decide to do, try not to dwell on your father’s treatment of you versus the treatment of your siblings. This will only further upset you and it seems that your father apparently receives some twisted pleasure from causing these feelings within you. Do not give him this satisfaction over you. If need be, treat him as a generous host allowing you temporary privilege to stay in his home for the duration of your stay in the home while you’re attending school.

I use TD Ameritrade. It is ok. I think both of the others are too, but Etrade does have financial problems. Scottrade is the least expensive. I also use Fidelity. They are a lot more expensive but they do have more extensive research. You sort of get what you pay for. In some ways TD Ameritrade is better than Fidelity.

Do you know the meaning of christmas?
Hello, I remember very vividly of my previous post. It is taking all my willpower not to break down and cry as I write this. Please bear with me for I am not being judgemental, and I wish to pass no Judgement, I am merely here to give my own view, and speak openly. I am hoping that this will reach many hearts, and I wish to hear everyone’s opinions, stories, anyrthing that you wish to share in the end, but please take the time to read this.
To begin, I would like to first ask you, What does Christmas mean to you? Is it just another holiday, that you take and receive many gifts and a multitude of cash. Does it feel like a hassle to plaster on a fake smile when family and friends come to visit? Do you even bother to thank the Lord for your meals? If you are a christian please read this, but if you are not please read all the same. I am not here to pass judgement, just I have had some recent moments to ponder the ratio of people who actually celebrate christmas for Jesus’ birth, or for the people out there who just adapted by putting it as a holiday of gifts and family. Both is well, but you must think what makes your heart happier. Are you one of the people who attend church just once a year so you can keep your slate clean with God, or are you dedicated?
I must admit, I am not perfect as many of you have already guessed. In fact, you very well might have found a flaw in my writings- i may be a little biased. I am, just like you- only human though. If I were to look now out into the multitude who shake their heads, Im scared to know how many that say no to this kind of writing are actually christian.
First off, I just want to point out, if those of you who are christian are out there, why hide your faith? I mean, dont shove it down peoples throats, but dont stand by idly as your Lord and Savior’s name is used in slander. Especially during christmas, you want to be set apart from the world, show them a smile, be the light in all of the darkness. Dont speed through life hoping youll avoid disaster, do as it say in James, Embrace the challenge of temptation, for it is not a bad thing, Jesus faced many temptations himself, but he proved to be of a higher magnificence. The bible says he went for 40 days without eating, and you know what the next verse was, "He was hungry". Correct me if im wrong , but doesnt that show that he like us suffered being human. He came from being a heavenly body to the sin of humanity. I’ll admit, Ive gone through some things that sometimes I think, hew cantve gone through what Ive gone through, but he has. Hes gone through hurt, pain, rejection, he probably slipped even when it came to love himself.
Secondly, those gifts you know. Wouldnt be there had christ not been born to save and redeem us. I am not pointing fingers because being 14 and all I struggle with this greatly, but why do we have to be so GREEDY when receiving presents. Were lucky to get any at all, GREED is one of the seven deadly sins, and one of the topmost devoloping horrors in the world. Because, one too many see it this way, hey, I have one car, thats great, buuut what if i had two or three. Or when a man becomes dissatisfied with his wife, and sees her only as pleasing to the eye and cheats. Greed is a horrible trait, and we must diminish it, if not any other day, ESPECIALLY on christmas.
Lastly, I just want to say no matter how you think of it, santa is not everything. If you have children, dont just expose them to "santa claus" show them th other side, you dont have to celebrate the religion but at least give the proper origin, because christmas did not start with a fat guy crawling down a chimney, it started with something greater. I send all my love to those worldwide, and hope I do not slander anyone else, but just think what does christmas mean to you? I’m an atheist, but I still celebrate Christmas and it has meaning to me .
To me, Christmas means thinking about others than yourself and striving for peace on earth.
To say that why do we have to be so GREEDY when receiving presents is extremely biased. I’m 14 andthis year especially, I have surprised myself with my generosity and selflessness.
I don’t get allowance, my parentsnever give me any money, I only get money from babysitting, and I spent 200 dollars on gifts for my mom, dad, and sister.When I think about Christmas and get excited, I think aboutpeople opening the presents I got for them, not me opening presents.
There are lots of reasons to celebrate Christmas, not just because of religion.

Mood swings.chemical imbalance?
Hi first a little bit about myself,I’m a male 38years old,fit and heathy. I train twice a week and try to look after myself.I work hard,generous and a loving family man that loves his wife and children very much,but the problem is i suffer from mood swings ever since i was about 25,i lost alot of friends in accidents and it did send me into a depressive state but i feel happy now and life is good apart from my stupid moods,.I dont drink or smoke dont do drugs,yes i seen a shrink due to depression but like say i feel happy now, only different thing is now i have a lot of crazy compulsive disorders mainly always to do with death,if i think of a number and its to low straight away i think my lad will die young so i count to 120, yeah crazy eh.the list goes on and on. sometimes i had a great day at work and i driving home and something just seems to go in my head and i in a mood or feel sad, and my temper is worse of the worse,its like tunnel vision i know i doing it i just cant stop, but eventually i do and i can forget about the argument within seconds and carry on as if nothing happened unfortunetly my wife cant and i dont blame her.its as if i get taken over and then lets me be back to my loving family person i am.its so upsetting i try so hard i tend to have mood swings least twice a week that last for about hour.no person should ever put up with them i desperatly want help.i tried medication for depression that dont work, this past 15months i been very very tired and headaches got no energy hardly at all which is unusual as i always had a get up and go attitude,any ideas?brain tumour?am i going nuts? i just dont know,the doc says i proabably depressed but i not i happy we have great holidays nice treats etc etc its just me spoiling it all.help.

Well luckily you are not the only one suffering from these types of things. First of all, have you had any blood work done? These lab values can show a deficiency or excess in a certain area. You would be surprised that this can cause many problems with your body…especially when under a lot of stress. This must be done first to rule this out. Secondly, does this sort of behavior run in your family? By the way…did you try different anti-depressants? Everyone is different and you have to try different ones to find the one that works for you!! It may take 3-4 trys to find the right fit. There are many choices…just because it’s not working for you doesnt mean that anti-depressants as a whole won’t work…Also some of them take up to 3-4 weeks of taking them to show results…Let me know whats going on with you…Finally, were all crazy at some point or another…youre not alone…:)). Did something traumatic happen to you recently?

Incubus is my favorite band, and most of their songs do not have low notes. I can sing almost all their songs on key and hit the notes, with the exception of a few songs with very low notes, so I know what you are talking about, but MOST of their songs are not low.

Which type were you looking to sing?

Cuz there’s a big difference between "Megalomaniac" and "Oil and Water" you know?

Try a site that has a transpose option for the sheet music before you purchase. I use www.musicnotes.com. They have tons of different songs from all genres of music. I transposed a Josh Groban song to be in a slighter lower key so I was able to hit the high notes without straining to hit the high notes. Try to stay within your gender to find songs to fit your voice. I like Jazz, but I’m by no means an Ella Fitzgerald. Just a little tip on singing, just because you like a certain style of music, doesn’t mean that it fits your voice well. Good Luck in your search.
