Perfect World, A

Perfect World, A
Perfect World, A (1993)

IMDB rating: 7.20

Plot: A Perfect World touches you from the bottom of your heart. It is a story about a man and a boy. A man escapes from a prison with his partner who he does not like. After escaping, they kidnap a little boy. It is not a simple kidnapping story as people expect with violence and blood. This man, as he describes himself, is not a good guy, but not the worst either. The boy, living with his mom and two sisters, follows their family??s religion, which forbids him from celebrating Halloween, celebrating Christmas, participating in parties, and pretty much any fun common for children of his age. The man gives the boy opportunities to play the games that he wants to, tells him what is wrong and what is right, and asks him to be independent and make his own choices.

Religion is the root of all evil….really?
When Stalin came to power he wanted to eradicate the Russian Orthodox Church, so between his ascension to power and the 2nd world war 40,000 orthodox priests, 40,000 orthodox nuns and monks, and millions of ordinary orthodox Russians were killed.

Now I don’t believe any belief system is perfect, and I think any belief system is open to abuse by evil people. But to the atheists who claim that atheism is more peaceful than religion, how can you explain or justify these figures? Yes, religion has caused a lot of problems, but it has been around since humans evolved, and in that time it has also done a lot of good.

Atheism has been around in mass form for about 100 years…and already it’s been the cause of one of the world’s most massive systematic exterminations of people of a different belief.

It seems to me atheism is just one more belief system, and atheists are just as open to the "sins" of pride, arrogance and intolerance about other beliefs as any religious person.

Thoughts?

How about because human beings are, while capable of unparalleled achievements, are still (by and large) bastards by nature?

Well, Stalin was an insane dictator…he killed them to gain a better control of the people. Not in the name of atheism. Yes, Stalin was a sick man for killing his own people, but I do not think it was because of his atheism, but by mental instabilities and a love for power.

yea… Atheist are to blame for the holocaust, 9-11 and witch hunts, then there is the Spanish Inquisition.

‘Atheism has been around in mass form for about 100 years…and already it’s been the cause of one of the world’s most massive systematic exterminations of people of a different belief.’

Stalin’s atheism is irrelevant. His atheism was not the driving force behind those systematic exterminations, unlike the countless holy wars and crusades, directed by minds warped by religion.

Of course, anyone of any faith or lack thereof can grow into a monster. But religion provides an incentive in the minds of the evil.

Original sin is a christian concept, is it not? God created everything including flawed mankind and Satan.

So if you accept christian doctrine, then yes, religion is the root of all evil.

not the root just the couse.

some people are just evil religion makes then feal good about it
Black | Nov 22, 2009

I will never say religion is evil, but I will say some people abuse religion in order to do evil. Big difference, really.

Stalin didn’t do anything in the name of atheism. To be more specific, he didn’t even abuse atheism to do evil, he was just pure evil. That has nothing to do with atheism, just as the 9/11 thing had nothing to do with Islam.

And sorry, as an atheist, I refuse to defend myself for what Stalin did. Stalin also had gray hair. This morning I found my first gray hair. Should I feel guilty now?

Many people have killed FOR their religion. How many people kill FOR atheism?

Your association was flawed and not rational.

Though, obviously religion is not the cause of all evil. It’s just one source of it.

‘Religion is the root of all evil….really?”

NO, religions provided the first human societies and civilizations, with morality and showed them a basic away of life.

Its easily to blame religions for the actions of men (respective followers).

Please stop throwing the word evil and sins around when you have no idea what those words even mean. You seem to possess an acute intelligence, so I would suggest reading into the words that have you have so easily used here - till than I will not take what you write seriously. Religion in itself is not evil (that is it doesn’t harm humanity), but the beliefs that they have or the way those beliefs are used make things like exterminations, and the INQUISITION justified.

My pupils are working on old legends and myths. I was wondering what classic film I would show them.?
I have thought about "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves". What would you suggest? These are adults and adolescents.
I was thinking about British legends or Celtic ones because I am a teacher o ESL.
Thank you. :)

I love any of the King Arthur films. If you can get hold of a copy try ‘Mists of Avalon’, this is a pretty long film though, about 3 hours I think, but it is a good one.
I also think that the Robin Hood films are also great.
Also, what about: Merlin. This is apparently a good film.
There is also: Fairy Tale. A true story of the Cottingley Fairies where two girls reproduced the fairies at the bottom of the garden. A great English myth that had people believing in it for years. This one is based on true facts.
I hope these help in some way and I wish english was so interesting when I was studying it - it must be great fun in your class. :-)

What about "Arthur", the relatively new one out about Arthur and his knights? Or there is one of my favorites "Excalibur" which as more of the traditional Arthurian legend components in it. Both these films would be appropriate. Your choice is also good.

Don Quixote has always been a classic movie and book.

I, personally, have enjoyed working with students on Ivanhoe. Again both the Movie and the book are classics.

There is always "A Midsummer’s night dream." Shakespeare can do no wrong. Especially when he draws from classic mythology. I believe there are several movie versions about.

If you want to get really serious there is the movie called "The Trojan Women," but it is a bit too serious for young’uns.
